Strandbeast invasion

We have seen a number of reports about the big creatures created by Theo Jansen. The small kits are now available through different channels. The one in the video is produced by otonanokagaku.net which I have two kinds of assembly kits.

The other one in the picture is produced by 3D printer which does not require to assemble: it is printed as one piece. Interesting. <shapeway> via <mocoloco>.

Both are built with similar geometry, I would love to see more different design creatures just like the big scales and you can put them inside your backyard or garden.

I am not good at making decision. It does not mean I cannot make the best choice but always think of the good side of the second options.

Shelving system has the advantage of adjustable, expandable and can be put your new apartment as you move. But just because my small living space and "this" shelve is so valuable, I have to pick the configuration with special care: best looking, best storage capacity and best price.... should be most affordable price.

Option 1

This should be the most typical configuration, all enclosed storage space are at the bottom.

Option 2

This configuration is more attractive as a shelving system should do. And it free up the storage space under the table to keep the stool and other stuffs. But this also may block the air flow from the air conditioner above, I am worry this may do harm to the cabinet.

This radiator by Joris Laarman was well known for sometime which was firstly introduced by Droog. The tube is in plant shape and the tap as a flower. The work is very huge which is not considered for small space. But now, a smaller version is available and surprisingly, it looks nice even at a smaller scale. Radiator is not common in HK, I am wondoring if it can be used for other purpose. hehe

Finished a lot of works and it looks almost no difference with original. But if you look closer, you can find Ctrl and Fn key on the low end of keyboard. Now I can quit a program by pressing Alt F4 or restart a machine by pressing Ctrl Alt Del........

I have not tried it with a tablet yet. Must be very fun.

Did I miss something? Yes, I first saw this idea in yr 2007 and it was quite clever but was not well presented. That was my impression, unit now it has changed a lot: more accessories, more like an end-product AND the company can customize the appearance pattern for you!. So this re-cycle furniture obtains red-dot award. There is another smaller verion available as under table cabinet but it is all brand new.

I need an old phone

To get a refurbished rotary phone is one of my rough shopping mission. Telephone was so frequently used in the past and so personal that required absolute sterile. Also most of the rotary phone are used items, there are not only scratches but change of color on the plastic mold. I actually do not mind some character sign on the phone but thinking of hygenic issue, I prefer to pay a bit more to get a seriously refurbished phone. But this comes to an issue: it is really rare to get a clean phone and also good looking style. I almost give up then I found a UK online shop selling these range of telephone. All are design icon of the decade and the most important thing is they are " refurbished internally and fit in branded new moulding and cords". So what is the price?

Vacuum cleaner choice

I am tried of cleaning the dust filter and bag that degrade my vacuum cleaner. Considering to get better with my allergy, I want to get a better cleaner that encouraging to do housework. There are three models that attracting me:

1. Dyson DC26- pros: small size (foot print A4 paper), HEPA filter, cyber feel, easy to clean and dust bag free. It comes with different hose. I have tried it is convenience. cons: expensive, expensive, air-flow may be lower than Miele. Finally, I bought this one because it comes with car kit, a air driven brush which I think it can intake more dust proactively. This unit is quite noisy as many forum mentioned. Also, the exhausted air direction may be in my cleaning side and blow my "target" away. Also the unit is quite hot, I am not sure if this is normal.

2. Karcher VC 1902 - pros: steam and vacuum cleaner, water + HEPA filter, steam and iron mattress and sofa !!! industrial brand. Cons: more expensive as expected. large as expected (A3 paper), cleaning filter is comparative complex. I looks the same as OSIM.... which one is the OEM? I heard a lot comment that the OSIM filter needs to be change so I give up

Electrolux Twinclean - pros: Twin HEPA filter, high power 500W air flow, self clean filter, bagless. cons just aware bagless cannot intake water.....is it real? And it is very huge in size. so I gave up as well.

Actually, I have been attracted by these acient machines for long time especially the Olivetti Valentine. But I cannot persuade myself to get one till now simply because other than decoration, it is no use to me.

Picture worths thousand words. Three days were wasted to build several servo adaptors and here comes two final candidates. There are two design requirements: 1. align with upper arm servo 2. make the shape compact. Each design can only meet one and there is no perfect solution. After several weeks of struggling, a pair of small robot hands is built though it is not nicely presented. Spending time in building palm and finger is not a big deal. Finding the right servo is really a painful job, and there is no off-the-shelf solution. It comes up with a lot of modification with extra effort and money spend in return. I can now move one step further to connect the hand to the arm. This will add 4 more DOF to the robot. exciting!!!

This is a new kind of folding bike called Janko Flik designed by Topeak. From its geometry, I prefer to call it shrinking bike. This "transformer" can fit into metro and easily be handle without carrying it as shown in the picture. That's a clever design for traveler and it can be a big hit in Taiwan as cycling is real hot in whole country.

These are the new seatings which were delivered just before my wife came back from abroad. Actually, I did not expect the delivery so soon and it is just a flash to me that it can be a surprise to her if she find some big things change when get back home.

Compare with my previous sofa, I intend to put a smaller two seater sofa and match with a lounge chair. This form a clear living space and the organic shape of seating neutualize the sharp and regular wood furniture. That looks more human now.

Forget how it starts. I begins to search for folding bikes and want to learn more about cycling. During my trip to Taiwan, I notice cycling is getting hot in Taiwan and esp folding bike is rising too. My Taiwan friend told me that a lot of people love to travel with their bike and it is a trend after a movie about cycling. That is esp good at this moment when there are so many enviromental issues in our living world and for a well developed country, more people intend to use bicycle for transportaton. I know that is a big topic and there are a lot of nice bike in the market that keep me digging for more news.

Same as all other hobbies, cycling can be a deep hole to invest or it can be very economic for public. Just keep to the direction you love and you can afford. That's it.

Bravo!!! Few years ago, my impression on Muji furniture product is only good presentation in the catalogue. But starting from last year, its new items are getting better although I have not bought any piece from Muji yet. And I know this time I have something to shop. I do like Germany furniture because of its extreme quality and you can find no way to complain. Besides, thanks to its minimalist style, many of its contemporary furniture are simple and easy to match. That's why I am so addicted to Germany brand.

Lastly, it is a Norway Says design sofa called Juno. It looks great in all directions and I agree with the description: it should be put in the middle of the living room so it can serve as a centre piece.

Accidentally, I passed the Lane Crawford Home Store and it was on sale. Some items had significant reduction thought the price was still high.... There are some light furnitures that worth to take a look and give my home a new look. I like the Fritz Hansen coffee table and it should be a good deal comparing the price from the online shop. But, well I just bought one from Ikea.... I should not think of the other. The other budget item is a table called Frog by Naughtone. But my wife don't like the glass top.... Seems I have to pay the original price for something perfect.

Experiment time again. This is the pocket size projector that I think worth to try. Not because it is made by DELL but its spec: DLP, contrast 800:1, 50 lumen and a projector liked lens. Also Keystone - an extra function that I do not expect in such a small projector. It is hard to imgine a projector can be as small as a palm size 3.64" x 4.12" x 1.46" / 0.80 lbs. Just wait for one / two months, I can play with it and generate more fun with my home. <dell>

There are a lot of news about how small the coming projector will be and commercial products have been produced and seen in fairs. Palm size, pocket size, pico size... even a phone can have a projector built-in. What for? to watch clips, games, file display and small group presentation etc. But I have another idea which I won't consider when project size is large and burning hot: Use it as an lighing object. Thanks to the ultra bright LED, these pocket size projector is so instant and cool with low power discipation. Now I can put it to illuminate a small corner with water wave pattern, moving shadow just like a big show room. Many idea is poping up now and what I need is to buy a good pocket projector with at least 500 lumens, 40 inch.

New Hulger USB phone

Hulger brings good idea by making spectacular VoIP phone, vintage handset with USB adapter. It is great but expensive. That's why there are many similar products which are much more popular. I bought a PENELOPE*PHONE last year and that cost me 160USD at that time. But later I found the price dropped quite a lot at the offical web, I think they realized their price is way too high. But be honest, their special edition is really amazing for collector.

OK. This is the new product called PAPPA* made of wood and brass, a good color and texture matching but it cost 300...... Anyway, the workmanship seems good and there are some improvement on the cradle connector and the phone jack. But I 'd suggest some curve shape and more details on the base will be more sexy. <Hulger>

I am not sure the black light effect is as good as seen in the picture, it is hard to see a furniture with a big flash in your eye. This is the one and surprisingly it is also manufactured by Ennezero; the maker of Tester Bed Vita Privata which is my sister's favourite four poster bed. I know it is a bit crazy but I am really addicted to e15 product esp seeing its new items in show room and IMM cologne report. When I first read e15 is going to launch upholster series, I thought it should stick on its hard wood business. But when I saw this modular series, oh god, I am looking for this so long. The extra tall upholstery board provide a simple solution to avoid. wall reflection of music. No extra sound absorption work is required. Also the idea for rear board does serve a good option to improve the interior appearance. I know my living room is too small to fit all these master piece. But I really love it. <e15>

OK! a new CD player requires additional input to my speaker. So there is no extra port for my subwoofer and I decided to give up my 2.1 config. Finally, I can play CD with my new toy and output to active monitor. This is really a painfull experience. Normally, an amplified output signal cannot used as line-out. I did great search on any HiFi shop and no one think it is possible or it will have great distortion. Lastly, I found a rare HiFi accessory in ebay that did the exact function for high power rated amplifier. This precious blackbox is right behind my CD player in the picture. The sound may not at top quality but I have no complaint now.

It is shame to tell my friends that I cannot play a CD normally in living room. My dumb DVD player has only one output and audio signal has to be output from TV indirectly. And I do think to play a CD nicely, it is a must to have a good CD player, with DAC and digital output for external DAC. To fit my current configuration, I need a good looking and compact CD player to work with my Elekit tube preamp and Genelec active speakers. Seems Musical Fidelity X-ray series is targeting to those users like me. But I like the appearance of V3 rather than the latest model.

My sister's apartment renovation is finally finalized. At least everything is put in space. Thanks to her, her got several items in my "dream list" and built an incredible dream home. Dare to say, not much people have the patient to insist matching all these items. This is not easy to accomplish but we made it. The work is not finished yet and still need to entertain our elderly's.

This folding table is so neat that no one should criticize on it ...except the pricing which is quite subjective. The use of plywood with clever folding design, make this table serve the most basic function just as it's name called "last minute". Some new photos are added in the web, so I can get a clear picture what it looks like when matching with the surrounding. I think this is the one for my Swedese bend chair.
